Challenge
Stop and listen to the Holy Spirit. Praying is not just a one-way conversation with the Lord.
(Please exhibit safe driving techniques while praying and driving – i.e. don’t close your eyes.)
Tips
This challenge may take some time. Be intentional to set some time in your schedule aside. Don’t rush. Set aside distractions like your phone notifications or even music.
Before You Begin
Begin with stillness and surrender. Before speaking, take a few moments to quiet your heart. Tell God you're listening and surrender your agenda. The Holy Spirit often speaks in stillness, not noise. Start by praying, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).
As You Pray
Invite the Holy Spirit to Lead Your Time
Practical Tip: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your prayer — to help you know what to pray and how to hear. We don’t always know what to pray for, but the Spirit helps us align with God’s will. Romans 8:26
Simple Prayer Example: “Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts, quiet distractions, and speak to me. Help me to pray according to your will.”
Use Scripture to Tune Your Ears
Practical Tip: Read a short passage of Scripture and sit with it, asking the Spirit to highlight a word or phrase. God often speaks through his Word. The Spirit often brings Scripture alive in a personal, timely way.
Read Psalm 23 or John 15 slowly, then wait and listen for a part that stands out — ask why it does.
Pay Attention to Impressions, Not Just Words
Practical Tip: As you listen, note any gentle impressions, pictures, or persistent thoughts. They might seem subtle — that’s okay. The Spirit often speaks through an inner nudge, peace, or conviction rather than an audible voice.
Write Down What You Sense
Practical Tip: Keep a journal of what you sense the Spirit is saying. Then pray it back to God — thanking him, asking questions, or seeking confirmation. Writing helps you discern over time. It makes space for two-way conversation, not just a list of requests.
