Challenge
Ask someone “How can I pray for you?” Pray for opportunities to engage meaningfully with people.
(Please exhibit safe driving techniques while praying and driving – i.e. don’t close your eyes.)
Tips
God calls us to share the burdens of others. “Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18. That’s easy when it’s a friend, but God also gives opportunities to pray for people who cross your path when you’re alert for it. When you’re at the grocery store do you talk to the cashier or look at your phone? Do you make conversation with the serving staff at a restaurant? Do you stop when a stranger you’re walking by is clearly having a hard time? Asking someone if they need prayer opens the door for conversation and relationship, even if only for a moment. We do not know the burdens others may carry unless we ask.
Don’t be discouraged if the answer is no. Someone who doesn’t want prayer isn’t rejecting you. Even after you walk away you can spend time in prayer for them.
Before You Begin
As you go out, ask the Holy Spirit for boldness to talk to people and an attentiveness to the needs of others. Invite him to guide you. Then keep an ear open for him to do just that.
As You Pray
Some people need prayer right then and there as you are engaged. But time doesn’t always permit people to stop and pray. It’s okay to assure someone you will pray for those needs and then walk away to pray silently. But don’t wait too long. When you get to your car or return to your house, pray for those requests they bravely shared with you.
If it’s someone you see a lot, maybe return later to say you’ve prayed for them or ask for an update.
