Summer Sabbatical: A Few Details

I have officially begun my sabbatical thanks to a Clergy Renewal Grant from the Lilly Endowment and the support of my church family and the Calvary Church Elder Board. Lilly’s research indicates that continuing professional education for ministers benefits the church. When the pastor grows, the church grows.

The grant gives me an opportunity to step back from daily ministry responsibilities in order to engage in a program of spiritual and professional development. I intend to return at the end of summer refreshed and with a renewed vigor to win as many as possible in our community and around the world.

Occasionally, I’ll post updates about my travels and experiences here and on Facebook. Through the wonder of technology we can continue to enjoy God together!

I’ll be studying—and maybe collecting some new C.S. Lewis quotes!—in several places this summer:

I have set some professional goals for my sabbatical. This summer, I will

  • Continue research on the topics of theology, missions, and church history.
  • Make final edits on my book, A New Kind of Missionary, set for release this year.
  • Create an initial draft of a 7-year plan for the continued growth of Calvary Church.

In addition, I will be spending time with my family and enjoying this opportunity to travel.
