THE CROSS-SHAPED LIFE

Lenten Devotions

April 1 | The Power Source

Do not get drunk with wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead be filled with the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:18

Have you ever had that heart-dropping moment when you plug in your phone or computer and it doesn’t charge for some reason? Sometimes we’re like that as Christians. If you are in Christ, you have already been sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). While the spirit may be in you, you might not be choosing to abide in the Spirit. In other words, you have the battery but no power.

In first century Jerusalem, wine was a daily staple because it was safer than water. So today’s verse was written to people who understood that the Holy Spirit is to be a daily staple of dependence for living and that he is safe. To be “filled” means God has liberally supplied what is necessary to live life to the fullest as he intended. We have to make it a daily habit to connect with him, surrendering to his will, his ways, and his strength.

Lord, I am sealed by the Spirit, help me now to walk in the fullness of the Spirit. Forgive me for all the times that I think I am fine on my own. I know I desperately need you. You alone are my life source. Thank you for the gift of your spirit to teach me to walk in your ways and live life as you meant it to be lived.
