Jesus Reframes Suffering

Printable Version

Welcome to the Reframing Lent discussion guide! We’ve changed the format so there are fewer questions and less material to read. There’s more opportunity for your group to think, talk, and pray together as the Holy Spirit leads you.

Remember that groups are a place to listen, encourage, sometimes confront, and consistently pray for each other. Let’s not default to trying to fix hurts and burdens that are shared.

  • As you get settled, prepare to quiet your hearts for today’s conversation by praying through Psalm 27. Ask a group member to read the passage aloud slowly.

  • Ask a group member to read Mark 14:32-42.

  • How has past pain/suffering shaped how you live and treat others today?

  • Read Hebrews 4:14-16. Why is it sometimes hard to believe that Jesus sympathizes with our suffering or to trust him with our pain?

  • How has God redeemed hurt or suffering in your life?

  • James 1:2 challenges us to “consider it a great joy...when you experience various trials.” What does it look like for you to “consider it a great joy” or “count it all joy” (NIV) in the midst of your current struggles or hurt?

  • How can we as a group be part of your joy in the midst of what you’re dealing with? How can we pray for you?
