A 1975 graduate of Valparaiso High School, Jon Costas received his B.A. from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, and his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1989. Jon is currently the mayor of Valparaiso, and has held that office since 2004. He is also an attorney with Burke, Costanza, and Cuppy LLP, and specializes in the field of Elder Law, having obtained his certification in elder law from the National Law Foundation.
Jon is an energetic community leader and has served on numerous state and local boards and community efforts. He is also a small business owner. Most people are surprised to know that Jon was a performer on the Gong Show in 1977 (and no, he didn’t get gonged!)
Mayor Costas enjoys a variety of activities including running, biking, reading, guitar, song-writing, home recording, and competing in triathlons. He has completed five Ironman distance triathlons. Jon and his wife, Sharon, have four children and live on Valparaiso's north side. They have been members of Calvary since 2004, and both are very active in Calvary’s worship team.
A 1988 graduate of Valparaiso University with a B.A. in Marketing, Dave Gring is the Director of Sales for Steiner Homes and a Sales Associate for Century 21 Alliance Group.
Dave is an avid golfer and has turned his love for the game into a fundraising tool for local organizations. He is co-chair of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce FunDay Golf Classic and the chairman for the NWI Youth For Christ Golf Classic. He is also the head coach of the Valparaiso University men’s golf team.
Dave and his wife, Pam, have been active at Calvary since 2002. He is the head of the Band of Brothers men’s ministry and is a Life Group leader. Dave also serves on the Life Group Ministry Leadership Team. Dave and Pam live in Valparaiso with their four children. He enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, working in the yard, exercising, and hitting the links with fellow elders Brian Gensel and Pastor Lionel.
A longtime Midwesterner, Dave received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Ohio State University and his MBA from the same institution in 1996. Dave is currently an Area Manager for BP Whiting Refinery overseeing operations, maintenance, and engineering for one-quarter of the plant.
Dave is a passionate advocate for discipleship programs within the church. He volunteered as a Life Group leader soon after joining Calvary Church in 2004 and has served on the Life Group Leadership Team since 2008. More recently, Dave is working alongside Associate Pastor Mark Lackey to develop the Local Outreach Team.
Dave spends his free time watching his kids play sports, camping, and playing for the Calvary basketball church team. Dave, his wife Amy, and their six children live in Valparaiso.
Dr. Eugene Lin
Dr. Eugene Lin is a practicing physician in internal medicine and pediatrics. He received dual bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and East Asian studies from Indiana University in 1992, and obtained his M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1996.
Eugene is passionate about sharing the gospel and developing disciples for Christ and he makes a mission field of wherever he happens to be. At Calvary, Eugene serves on the Restoration Council and the Medical Response Team. He also teaches or contributes to adult electives on various topics.
In his free time, Eugene enjoys spending time with his family, swimming, reading, playing video games, and traveling. Eugene, his wife, Janice, and their two children live in Valparaiso.
Porter County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Gensel followed up a B.A. in Business Marketing from Purdue University (1983) with a Juris Doctor degree from Valparaiso University in 1987. Brian was elected to his current office in 2006 but has served the citizens of Porter County in the Prosecutor’s Office for the majority of his career.
Brian uses his legal training throughout the community. He coaches the Valparaiso High School Mock Trial Team and lectures for the Porter County Law Enforcement Vocational Program at Wheeler High School. In addition, Brian supervises law students in the Prosecutor Externship Program and is an adjunct professor of law at Valparaiso University, teaching Trial Advocacy. He and his wife, Carleen, have been members of Calvary since 1997, where Brian has taught both adult and high school classes. Currently, he is a Covenant Group leader.
Brian and Carleen live in Union Township with their two sons, Daniel and Nathaniel. He says that his sons, both exceptional students and talented musicians, are the pride and joy of his life. He is also fervent about the game of golf (and trying to best long-time course compadre, Pastor Lionel). Brian builds golf clubs, owns a ping-pong robot, and is known to his Calvary friends as “Gadget Gensel.”
