Fun Facts About Jon:
Family: Kay and I have been happily married since 1990. We have two sons, Justin and Chris.
Biggest influences: Those who have had an influence on my thinking and practice from a distance: Augustine, Blaise Pascal, Soren Kierkegaard, John of the Cross, Jonathan Edwards, CS Lewis, Dallas Willard and Tim Keller. Those who have had an influence on my life and thought up close: Walt Henrichsen, Doug Haag, John Coe, and JP Moreland.
Music in my car: Maybe it's best to ask, "What isn't playing in my car?" Polka. Other than that, I listen to most everything from Classical to Classic Rock with a little bit of country, gospel and rap in-between. Probably my favorite music form is jazz and it's what I listen to the most.
Favorite Word: Three words... "grace", "eucatastophe" and Paul's use of the word "scubala" (rubbish/dung) in Phil. 3:8
Least favorite word: Two words... "Black Friday"
Sounds and Noise I love: The sounds of being outdoors alone in the morning or evening, a gentle rain, a jazz trio
Noise I hate: The constant honking of car horns in Calcutta. It's ok at first but it grinds on you after awhile.
Favorite Movies: Here are some of the movies I could watch again and again - the Lord of the Rings trilogy, A Few Good Men, the Godfather (1 & 2), Indiana Jones (1 & 3), Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, the Matrix (only 1), Dumb and Dumber, You've Got Mail, The Magnificent Seven, Christmas Vacation, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Inception, Babette's Feast, Father of the Bride, Seven Samurai and most anything with Denzel.
Favorite books: Again the list is long but here are a few - Confessions, The Pensees, Imitation of Christ, Dark Night of the Soul, Religious Affections, The Sickness Unto Death, The Search for God and Guinness, Renovation of the Heart, Formed for the Glory of God, The Contemplative Pastor, The Mission of God, anything by CS Lewis and Tim Keller, early Tom Clancy and John Grisham.
Spare Time: Watching football, reading, learning the finer points of cuisine, getting to the gym, drinking a great cup of coffee (or craft beer) along with a great conversation
Best invention: Three letters... DVR
Another profession I’d like to try: Restaurant reviewer for Travel Channel
A profession I never want to try: Bullfighting
Passions: The gospel; Great thinking, great food and drink, and great conversations; Thinking about how the church can make disciples who are being fully transformed into the likeness of the Savior.
Biggest frustrations: "Thin" Christianity that is expressed through complacency, quick fixes, and the use of cheap cliches.
When I get to heaven I want to hear God say: You did well with the opportunities and giftings I gave you. Now get ready for the marriage feast of the Lamb!
